THE ANDTEX TRAINING AND CARE ORGANISATION (TATCO-Uganda)
INTRODUCTION
The organization is called
THE ANDTEX TRAINING AND CARE ORGANISATION which is abbreviated as TATCO-Uganda.
The organization was formed
in2012 after realization of the high unemployment and poverty levels caused by
illiteracy of the community members of Njeru Town Council where the founders
were born and grew up from. This led to underdevelopment of the community and
rural-urban migration where the youths run to towns in search for jobs and
better life standards.
After completion of the University
studies 3 years back, Kato Andrew one of the founders of the organization
thought of what they could do for their community hence an idea of a Community
Based Organization which could try to address some of the challenges that Njeru
Town Council community faces with the help of other members.
TATCO-Uganda is a fully
registered Community Based Organization (C.B.O) registered under the guidelines
for Civil Society Organization in Buikwe District in 2013.
BACKGROUND
TATCO-Uganda was formed in 2012 by Kato Andrew and
NabbanjaDeziranta who are both residents of Njeru Town Council.
Njeru Town Council is a big community
located near the shores of Lake Victoria bordering Jinja District in the East
and Mabira forest in the West. The community is characterized by people with
high levels of illiteracy and some are ignorant about their social and economic
welfare. In addition with high population due to high birth rate, the available
jobs in the government and private sector are insufficient for the population
on the ground. Hence, after this
observation, we decided to start up a
Practical skills training and care organization (TATCO-Uganda) where we hope
that people will get practical skills to help them earn a sustainable living.
The organization is governed by a Board of Directors and the day-to-day management
committee is headed by the Executive Director.
There are key policies and operational procedures in place which guide
management and staff in the course of executing their duties.
The
communities involved have been vulnerable youth, women, children, and the
elderly in Njeru Town Council community. These initiatives of development have
helped many communities especially in income generation for sustainable
development.

OBJECTIVES
-
Promote
and provide practical skills training to the unskilled through training them in
tailoring, computer, art and craft, music which will help in creating
employment within the rural communities and by that, contributing to bridging
the urban-rural gaps in the Eastern-region and also as a long-term means
poverty reduction.

Improve
the wellbeing of women by grouping them and create for them projects which can
generate income for them and make them have a spirit of togetherness

To
create awareness to the local people about their social, economic welfare
through counseling and career guidance seminars periodically.

Improve
the agricultural sector in Njeru through organizing agricultural workshops and
put up demonstration farms.

The organization is located in Njeru Town Council
and it is carrying out its work in the villages of Lugazi II, Nakibizi, Bukaya,
Nsenge,Mbikko, Wampala, Soweto all found in Njeru.
TATCO-Uganda’s
PROGRAMMES/PROJECTS
For the start the organization started with
three major programmes to be carried out in the community for the first three
years of operation in Njeru Town council. These include:
1.
Practical
Skills training.
a. Computer
Training
In this certificate program, students receive a complete introduction
to the computer and the Windows operating system. They learn several software
packages, including Microsoft Word and Excel. Students learn basics of computer
maintenance and how to use the Internet. Finally, students apply their
knowledge and skills by creating business letters, advertisements, and identity
cards. Upon completion, graduates are prepared to work in secretarial bureaus,
offices, or begin their own business.
b. Tailoring
In this 1-year certificate program, students learn basic tailoring
skills including sketching, stitching, pattern cutting, pedal sewing machine
operation and machine maintenance. During the course of the program, students
learn to sew a sport shirt, standard tunic shirt, Kaunda suit shirt, butterfly
shirt, fashion blouse, trousers, sport shorts, pleated shorts, nursery uniform,
school uniform, wrapper skirt, pencil skirt, choir gown, Gomesi, apron and overalls. Upon completion,
graduates are prepared to work in a tailoring workshop or teach tailoring
in a limited capacity.
c. Art
and craft designing
This also a 1-year certificate course with students learning the
elements of art, principles of design, color theory, and basic drawing. They
also learn painting, collage, mosaic, ceramics, sculpture, and graphics.
Students produce several forms of crafts, such as hats, mats, bags, and wall
decorations, from local materials like banana fibres, natural dyes, bark cloth,
sisal, etc. Upon completion, graduates are prepared to work as artists in their
own capacities.
d. Music
training
This programme is geared to
producing talented and skilled musicians who can come out and earn a leaving
from the music profession given the fact that in Uganda and in the whole world,
music as a form of entertainment is highly recognized and a big income
generating activity. In this programme, students learn to play music instruments,
compose songs and produce quality music, and some times become DJs in clubs
because they understand the concept of music hence their wellbeing.
2. Care and support program
In
this, vulnerable and needy children are given a chance to go to school where the
organization gives them some bursaries and scholarships to study in good
schools in order to attain better education.Health support is given to the
elderly and vulnerable persons in the community through the collections of
items from the members of the organization and other donor agencies are
distributed to vulnerable groups.
TATCO-Uganda also carries out
career guidance and counseling to the students and the community members who are
in dare need of advice in any aspect of life. This is done by organizing
seminars, workshops and home visiting where individuals are called upon to meet
the career guidance counselors we have
in the organization who help them to make a good choice for their future and
live a healthy and informed life.
3.
Agriculture
modernization practices
TATCO-Uganda has experienced and skilled
agriculturalists who voluntarily decided to work with the organization in Njeru
Town Council to train the local people better ways of carrying out agriculture
which is productive. This is due to the available and fertile land that lies on
the shores of Lake Victoria and the nearness to Mabira forest which provides a
good environment for agriculture. Demonstration farms have been set up which
act as study centers to the local farmers.

Women
development projects
We start up and organize small women
development projects which makes them busy and get some income in order to
uplift their living standards. For now we have a women group handling a project
of catering and wine production which needs to be modernized and developed so
that it can get to the world market

ORGANISATION
ACHIEVEMENTS
Since the beginning of 2012 when the
organization was founded, there are some achievements reached on by the
organization.
A practical training school has been set up
in Lugazi II village located off Kampala Road. This has been a partnership with
St. America Vocational School where computer, tailoring, art and design is
being carried out from. For any student to enroll for a given course/practical
program, s/he has to only register with 10,000/= and after a year a student is
given a certificate after completion.
Four agricultural demonstration farms have
been set up in Soweto village on a 4 acre piece of land which is divided into
four (4) pieces for various crops and a big fish pond to act as a practical
training center for the farmers which they can use to get skills of carrying
out better agricultural practices in their farms.
During the festive season, various elderly
persons were visited by the organization and we donated to them various items
ranging from food, clothes and other basic home use items as gifts to them for
the year ending which helped them enjoy the festive season with a good mood.
10 children from poor families who exhibits
love to study and brightness have been given bursaries by TATCO-Uganda to
attain primary education in St. America and St. Bernadette Primary schools. The
money is got from the member’s contribution whenever we meet. And we expect to
increase on the number of children we support in school fees as our resources
increase.
TATCO- UGANDA SOURCE OF FUNDING
The funds of TATCO-Uganda are got
from the following;
a.
Membership fee.
b.
Monies acquired from fundraising activities.
c.
Donations from donors and beneficiaries.
d.
Self reliance programs and projects.
e.
Grants and gifts.
f.
Sister CBOS and NGOS or through any other source as the governing board may
decide.
